Hierarchically structured data are common in quantitative research in social sciences, psychology and educational sciences. The hierarchical structure of the data involves correlations between observations and these correlations must be accounted for in statistical analysis. Hierarchical or multilevel models are often used for this purpose. In the course, basic properties of multilevel regression and ANOVA models are introduced and demonstrated with the MLwiN software. In addition to lecture sessions, PC training sessions will be arranged for practical application of the methods, using real data sets.

ADVANCED WORKSHOP ON SOCIAL REPRESENTATIONS

University of Helsinki, Department of Social Psychology
November 4 – 6, 2009

Social representations theory is concerned with the transformation and dissemination of
knowledge in society. Through its focus on lay epistemology and the “thinking society”, the theory
provides the conceptual tools to analyse how shared values, beliefs and ideologies organise
people’s everyday lives, relations and actions. Research in different academic fields has greatly
contributed to the interdisciplinary development of this social psychological theory during the last
decade.

The Advanced workshop on social representations organised by the Social psychology department
of the University of Helsinki takes stock of these recent developments in social representations
theory and research. It is primarily destined for graduate students directly working on, or interested
in, social representations. The workshop features thematic group sessions which provide
participants the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other students and researchers
in social representations. Plenary lectures by researchers working both within and outside the
social representations tradition will complement these workgroup sessions.

Depending on the requirements of their home universities, students can validate the workshop or
get 2 ECTS credits by handing in a paper after the workshop. The paper should relate to students’
PhD work, and may take the form of a research plan, an empirical paper, an essay or a literature
review. The paper should be about 3000 words long and written in English or in Finnish.

Teachers
- Elisabeth Lage (EHESS, Paris ; to be confirmed)
- Anna-Maija Pirttilä-Backman (University of Helsinki)
- Christian Staerklé (University of Lausanne)
- & invited researchers (Hannu Räty, Annukka Vainio, Pilvi Torsti)

The workshop starts on Wednesday, November 4, at 12, and ends on Friday, November 6, at 18.

Prior to the workshop, participants are expected to read a selection of recent texts on social
representations which will be sent to them after their acceptance. They should also prepare a
PowerPoint presentation of about 15 minutes of their PhD work.

Interested students should contact Anna-Maija-Pirttilä-Backman (Anna-Maija.Pirttila-
Backman@helsinki.fi) or Christian Staerklé (christian.staerkle@unil.ch) and fill in the electronic
application form (https://elomake.helsinki.fi/lomakkeet/17221/lomake.html). No funding is available,
but the workshop is free of charge.

Deadline for applications is Friday, October 9, 2009.

POWER: Forms, Dynamics and Consequences

An International Conference, Tampere, Finland

September 22-24, 2008

What is power and who has power today? Has power escaped from nation-states to international organizations and the global market? Does power reside in big institutions or is it rooted in micro level interaction? How does power hide from view and therefore become most effective?

For social scientists power is in many ways like what St. Augustine said about time: it is central to our investigations and we think we know what it is, but it is hard to explain. By bringing together scholars who approach power from different angles this conference will advance our understanding about power relations in social reality. Keynote speakers will include:

Mitchell Dean
Robert Dingwall
Mark Haugaard
Tuula Juvonen
Lois McNay
Randy Lippert
Leslie Pal
Pekka Sulkunen
