Introduction

The Department of Management Studies offers teaching and engages in scientific research in three main subjects: Administrative Science, Marketing, and Management and Organisation. Within Administrative Science there is also a separate master's programme in security management, while study modules are offered in administration finance in higher education (HEG). Although the Department as a structure is new, having only been set up in 2004, the subjects it offers have enjoyed an established and esteemed position in the operations of the University for many years. A chair in Public Administration was established in 1965, at that time the first in its field in the Nordic countries.

The personnel of the Department of Management Studies numbers approximately 60. Of these 9 are professors, 11 are other teaching personnel, 7 are administrators and the remaining 30 or so are researchers. By student numbers the Department is among the biggest in the University. In 2004 there were 786 students reading for a degree and 1,120 studying minor subjects. For years Administrative Science, Marketing, and Management and Organisation have been extremely popular with students as both major and minor subjects. The average throughput time for a master's degree is five years for a main subject student. It appears from the statistics complied by the University that the employment prospects for those taking master's degrees in the main subjects offered in the Department are very good.

Studies

The subjects offered, Administrative Science, Marketing, and Management and Organisation are approached from diverse perspectives, including both entrepreneurial and public service sectors. In quality of education we place emphasis on expertise, basing teaching on research and science, keeping teaching up-to-date, incorporating internationality and respecting students' opportunities to exert influence and participate in the further development of teaching. Areas of strength in teaching include administrative systems and their comparison, strategy in entrepreneurial and public operations, leadership and management, client-orientedness in services, quality systems, human resources management and marketing design, management and leadership.

Research

Recent research projects have achieved links between business activity and various marketing subfields, leadership, strategic management, changes and reforms in central and local government, special issues in university and security management, competitive bidding for services, expert organisations and performance. In research the focus has gradually shifted to more extensive projects, research groups and networks. Our research projects have been financed by the Academy of Finland and various funds, public bodies and enterprises.

Expert mission in society

The personnel of the department fulfils its expert mission in society by being active in giving presentations, talks, by serving as experts in discussion forums in their respective fields, and by promoting the transfer of scholarly knowledge to practical working life. Of the subjects offered Administrative Science is of national importance as a provider of education in the units of the open university. We stress the good connection of practical working life to education and research, support through research and education for practical development work and functioning dialogue with the main national and local co-operation partners. Such studies include those conducted at the request of the Ministry of the Interior on the reform of the administration of the provincial and district administrations. We are also keen to do our part in promoting the critical examination of phenomena in society and in the construction of civil society.

Internationality

Internationality is apparent in many ways in both teaching and research. For example, representatives of Administrative Science have been involved in the development work on the Namibian administration and in providing expertise and research support in the NGO projects for good governance in Asia. The teaching and research group for university administration is involved in the European ERASMUS MUNDUS Programme, which provides bachelor's students coming from outside the EU with an opportunity to take a master's degree in administrative sciences in the field of university and financial administration. The Department is also active in its participation in the activities or organisations in its own international field.

Our principle is that all teaching and research should be of a high international standard. As a work organisation we aim to be inspiring, innovative, just - keen to promote well-being and generous in providing opportunities.

Administrative science

Administrative Science is the core subject for the whole discipline. Until 1994 Administrative Science was known as Public Administration. The subject studies public organisations, management and leadership, seeking to discern general rules and promote their development. It is thus an applied science concerned with the organisation regardless of its ownership or field of operations.

The main contents of the degree programme are:

  • Emergence and development of public organisations into their present forms
  • The structure and functioning of administrative systems in Finland and the EU
  • Phenomena determining development and change in administration
  • Basic theories of organisations, administration, management and leadership
  • Methods and techniques in administrative research
  • Basic approaches, methods and techniques in the assessment, development and planning of administration.

Administrative Science graduates have been very successful in finding work appropriate to their qualifications in the municipal and state sectors, in business companies and in various organisations.

In Autumn 1998 the Department began a new training programme in Security Management ; This is a Master´s programme intended for those aiming at administrative careers in the police force.

Moreover, the marketing programme teaches skills to apply theory in practice.

Management and organisation

The essence of management and organisation comprises management, leadership, organisations, business and strategy. The interest is on the dynamics of change. The core of the research and teaching in the subject is focused on strategic management and leadership of the firms and on the development of businesses and work communities. Teaching is closely connected to the ongoing academic research in the discipline and current problems of companies. The research projects concentrate on shared leadership in expert organisations, knowledge sharing as well as traditional and novel management methods.

Management and organisation is one of the subjects that can be studied in School of Economics and Administration at the University of Tampere. The subject introduces students to manage, lead, and develop businesses and personnel both at the operational and strategic level. The studies focus on issues and concepts of organising, managing, and developing firms and organisations at different stages of their life cycles and operating in different branches of industry. Students are also provided with basic skills in team and expert work.
