Research

The Department of Management Studies is a combination of organisational and leadership research unique in Finland with reference to both the public and private sectors. In keeping with its traditional public administration orientation, administrative science has produced a great deal of research on public administration and especially state administration. In Management and Organisation and in Marketing the research approach has been within the framework of business activity. In recent years research with linkages to third sector organisations has moreover been accomplished in the Department.

Individual studies have addressed administrative change, leadership, expert organisations, the rapprochement of public and private organisations, values and ethics, performance and innovativeness, strategic management and trust. Considerable research effort has been invested in issues pivotal to the development of leadership, management and marketing. Basic research has resulted in new innovative conceptual models in various fields of management while research conducted on commission has achieved creditable usability in working life, especially when assessed from the perspective of co-operation partnership and other interest groups. Some studies have been geared to the generation of research data for regional and local research needs.

Our Department's research policy stresses an inspirational work organisation, appreciation of basic research, adequacy of research funding and both diversity and equal opportunity for basic and applied research. We encourage our researchers to engage in research work which transcends disciplinary and departmental borders by national and international networking. The Department is especially keen to support the opportunities for young researchers to advance in their research careers by directing and encouraging them and by ensuring an environment conducive to peaceful work and the option afforded by other work to engage in research.
