Department of Education

The Department of Education was founded in 1992, when the previously independent departments of Education and Adult Education and Youth Work were merged. This change led to the formation of the Education Science Programme, in which students can major either in Adult Education or Education.  Since autumn 2005 the Degree Programme has been called the Degree Programme of Lifelong Learning and Education.

The  research in the Department is strongly focused on education policy and the structures of educational systems, international questions of education and research related to adult education and working life. Additionally, the Department conducts research on learning and new learning environments.

Graduates of the Department have been well placed  in working life, both in the private and public sectors. Expertise in education is nowadays appreciated in trade and industry and in social and health care. In  recent years the employment prospects  for graduates in Education have been good.

Currently there are 25 people working at the Department, 14 of whom belong to the teaching staff, three to administration while eight work in various research and other posts. In 2005, the number of undergraduates at the Deparment was 496, while  post-graduates membered 106.
