Main tasks
- Tuomas Takala (emai: m.tuomas.takala@uta.fi) is since 1992 professor (comparative education and sosiology of education) at the Department of Education, University of Tampere, Finland. He is former Dean of the Faculty of Education and currently Director of the Department of Education, past President of the Nordic Association for the Study of Education in Developing Countries (NASEDEC)(1994-96), member of the Working Group for Education Sector Analysis of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA)(since 1998) and member of the Govering Board of UNESCO`s International Institute for Educational Planning(since 2000). He has been a visiting professor at Utrecht University (the Netherlands), Hirosima University (Japan), University of Dhaka (Bangladesh) and Eduardo Mondlane University (Mozambique).
- His main researh area is education policy-making in developing countries, particularly
Southern and Eastern Africa and South Asia. He has extensive experience as a consultant to the
Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, UNESCO and ADEA in education sector analysis, and
planning and evaluation of education projects and programs. Among these assignments are
background studies prepared for the Education for All Global Monitoring Reports in 2004 and
2008.
- Takala is the author of three books (in Finnish): "Educational problems of developing
coutries", "Sociology of education" and "Education for all - the objective and reality in
developing coutries", and of numerous research reports and articles in international journals.
His latest publication is "Education Sector Programs in Developing Courntries - Socio-political
and Cultural Perspectives".
