Introduction

The Department of Music Anthropology is one of the departments of the Faculty of Humanities in the University of Tampere. The main areas of research and teaching are different manifestations of popular (folk) music as art and as part of social life. The activities of the department can be characterized as research of arts as well as cultural and social anthropology.

The main subject in the Department of Music Anthropology is ethnomusicology, in which a doctor's degree may be taken. It is possible to take basic courses in musicology and ethnology.

Functionally the Department of Music Anthropology is divided into two units: the teaching unit and the archives unit. The department has extensive archives which include recordings, photographs, manuscripts, records and music instruments. Collecting the folklife archives was begun in the 1940's. Today, the archives are the most important in the field of popular music in Finland.
