StudiesFolk music research in the University of Tampere was begun in 1965. Dr. Erkki Ala-Könni was then appointed docent of folk music studies and the teaching of folk music was part of studies in musicology. In 1974 it was given the status of an independent subject which was named 'folk tradition, especially folk music'. Erkki Ala-Könni was nominated our first professor of the subject. Over the years the Department of Folk Tradition (nowadays the Department of Music Anthropology) has become internationalized and today the global viewpoint is clearly present both in research and in teaching. It is also remarkable that popular music is nowadays well represented in the curriculum of the department. Not only music and its analysis but also connections between music and social phenomena are covered in teaching in the department. Studies include theoretical lectures, written exercises and personal training in music. |
