
The Computer centre provides it services for the students of the University of Tampere.
Every student of the University of Tampere obtains a Basic user account. The Basic user account is needed to log on to e.g:
Attached to the letter of acceptance, a new student receives a form containing his or her Basic user account and instructions for activating it.
Other students can apply for a Basic user account by filling in the form Basic user account application for students. The form is returned to the Computer centre Customer service.

New students can activate their Basic user account by verifying their identity at a Finnish web bank with their personal web bank user id and password, in which case they will also set a password for their user account.
Otherwise, students will get their password and instructions for changing it when enrolling as present at the registrar's office.
It is recommended to change the password of the Basic user account at least every six months. Please find the instructions for changing the password at NettiKatti service.
A forgotten password can be changed with the student's personal user id and password of a Finnish web bank or by visiting the Computer centre Customer service.
The Computer centre never inquires the users' user account or password by email or by phone. The password is personal and never to be disclosed to anyone else!

The Basic user account is valid for as long as the student has an open right to study and he or she has enrolled as present. The validity of the Basic user account can be checked at NettiKatti service.
User accounts and passwords are always personal and not to be disclosed to anyone else! When accepting a user account, the student agrees to comply with the Rules for the use of the information systems as well as other rules and instructions concerning the use of the information systems.

The address of the University's web mail is https://www.uta.fi/webmail/. The user administration sends a message to every new inbox, containing the student's email address. The mail quota is 200 Mb.

Moodle is a browser based studying platform which is used on several courses as a part of tuition. Moodle is a closed environment where students can carry out course assignments and get direct feedback of them.
The teacher will provide the required details at the beginning of each course.

There are twenty computer labs on the campuses. Students enrolled as present can use the computer labs mainly during opening hours of the buildings, and when the labs are not used for tuition.
Windows is installed in the workstations and there is a printer in every lab.
Problems with the workstations must be reported to the Computer centre Customer service by clicking the icon Vikailmoitukset.
Problems with the printers must be reported to Juvenes print. The contact information can be found on top of the printers.

The key card must be used to enter and exit the computer labs. Each instance of the use of the key card is registered in an access control system.
The key card is included in the student cards of degree students and exchange students. The key card is activated at either Tamy when collecting the student card or later at the Computer centre Customer service.
A lost key card must be reported immediately to the Computer centre Customer service, tel. 040 190 4141 or by email to asiakaspalvelu.tkk (a) uta.fi.
The key card is personal! Students are responsible for the key card and its use for as long as they are in possession of the card or until it has been reported lost.

A backed up home directory of 50Mb is included in the Basic user account. Files which are not older than a day can be restored from the folder Backup of home directory on the desktop of a workstation.
The home directory is drive X: in My computer. You can also browse the files in your home directory in web mail at My account/File manager/Edu home. Please find the instructions on the web mail logon page.
Students have a 200-page free print quota per term. The leftover quota will be added to the next term's quota up to 2500 pages. The quota will be reset if the Basic user account has been closed for six months.
As default, the printers print two pages per sheet, some printers print on both sides of the sheet.

Help desks offer guidance concerning the computer labs. The Help desks can be visited personally or contacted by email or phone.

The students and visitors of the University can use info stations in the corridors and lobbies of both campuses. Info stations only have a browser installed. To browse outside the University website, the users must log on with their Basic user account.
There are several group work rooms for students, with one computer and seats for 5-10 participants. Group work rooms are available during the opening hours of the buildings.

Students can log on to Utapac wireless network. There are wlan access points on both Main campus and Kauppi campus.

Unix user right is needed to
You can set the unix user right for your Basic user account at NettiKatti.
The students of the university have right to install F-Secure antivirus software on their home computer.
The Computer Centre also supplies licenses to some commercial programs. These programs can be purchased at a lower price for private use only. A program purchased from the Computer centre must only be used for studying, never for employment! The licenses are only valid for a predetermined time or until the end of the studies.
