Marja Jylhä, MD, Ph.D

Marja Jylhä, MD, Ph.D is Professor of Gerontology at the Tampere School of Public Health. She teaches courses at graduate and doctoral level on theories and methods in public health and different themes related to aging. Currently, she is supervising nine doctoral students. Her interests in research include disability and mortality; social determinants of health; longevity and the oldest-old; old age as a stage of life, and aging and health as social and cultural constructs. Her major research theme for twenty years is self-perceived health, and recently she is focusing on the biological basis of self-rated health. The social gerontology research group at the School of Public Health applies both epidemiological and qualitative methods and aims to promote interdisciplinary approaches in aging research. Major research projects include the Tampere Longitudinal Study on Aging (TamELSA), Vitality 90+ (Co-PI together with Antti Hervonen) , Aging in an Urban Environment (Urbage) and Age, Time to Death and Regional Characteristics as Predictors of Use and Costs of Health and Social Services (Coctel). |
