DOPAS is an international multidisciplinary programme in the field of ageing research. The programme consists of postgraduate courses, training and research in gerontology and related fields, such as epidemiology, social sciences, sport sciences, health care research and health sciences. An essential component of the program is formed by research seminars and individual supervision. After the theoretical training and a PhD dissertation the student will receive a doctoral degree in one of the following: Philosophy, Health Sciences, Sport Sciences, Social Sciences or Medicine. Prerequisites and requirementsThe students should hold a master's degree in a relevant area of study such as public health, gerontology, sport sciences, social sciences, epidemiology or medicine. Basic knowledge in epidemiology and statistics is desirable. The programme requires residence in either Tampere or Jyväskylä, Finland, for at least 10 months. However, it is recommended that the students reside in their place of study during the entire duration of their doctoral project, which normally takes four years. There are no tuition or course fees for the students. However, the students are expected to finance their travel cost as well as accommodation and living costs while staying in Finland. The minimum monthly living cost for students in Tampere and Jyväskylä, Finland, is approximately 700€. Therefore, the students are advised to apply for individual grants to cover these costs and make a preliminary plan of financing their studies in Finland. The plan should be attached to the application. Duration and creditsThe completion of the doctoral degree usually takes 2-4 years. Typically, the doctoral thesis work consists of articles authored by the candidate and published in international scientific journals, and a summary of the main findings. In addition, theoretical course work is required consisting of postgraduate courses and a research seminar (totalling from 40 to 70 ECTS). The courses will, to a large extent, be organised during the first year of study (from September 2009 to May 2010). Each student is supervised by a professor/ senior researcher, to be nominated in the beginning of the studies, for the whole duration of studies.
