Background

Yrjö Haila joined the staff of the department as a professor of environmental policy in the autumn of 1995. He graduated from the University of Helsinki with a major in ecological zoology; theoretical philosophy was the main secondary subject in his PhD studies. During his studies he worked as an observer at ornithological banding stations on Baltic islands, as a fisherman and as a free lance journalist and made inventories of green areas for the city of Helsinki and regional planning authorities in the County of Uusimaa. After graduation he worked as the general secretary of the Finnish Union of Scientists and Scholars, lecturer of zoology, and held the posts of junior and senior research fellow with the Academy of Finland, originally at the department of zoology, University of Helsinki, and in 1993-95 at the Satakunta Environmental Research Centre, Pori (University of Turku). He defended his doctoral thesis Ecology of Island Colonization by Northern Land Birds: a Quantitative Approach in 1983 (ecological zoology, University of Helsinki).
