Gained doctoral degree from the University of Tampere majoring in Regional Studies in 1994. Researcher in the Department of Regional Studies, University of Tampere 1990-1994. Senior lecturer and professor of Social Geography at the University of Joensuu, Finland 1996-1998. Academy researcher at the University of Tampere 1999-2001. Full professor of Regional Studies since 2001.

Visiting scholar in Los Angeles USA 1995-1996 (University of Southern California), Girona Spain 1999 (Universitat de Girona) and Trieste Italy in 2005 (Università degli Studi di Trieste).
