The study-related instructions and curricula of the School of Language, Translation and Literary Studies will continue to be used in connection with these Doctoral programmes.


Scientific Doctoral Education

Postgraduate Degrees

The postgraduate degrees offered at LTL are the Licentiate of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy. A licentiate degree is the optional intermediate step towards the doctoral degree. The Universities Act (558/2009), the Universities Decree (115/1998), the Government Decree on University Degrees (794/2004) and its amendment, Government Decree 1039/2013, stipulate the guidelines for the content, organisation and completion of university degrees in Finland. The General Regulations Governing Degrees of the University of Tampere, along with Board-approved regulations and curriculum guides, supplement the above-mentioned acts and decrees.

Doctoral Programmes

At the University of Tampere, doctoral education is organised as doctoral programmes run by the schools. The University's Doctoral School coordinates research training and plans and provides courses available to all doctoral students regardless of their line of study. LTL offers two doctoral programmes: the Doctoral Programme in Language Studies and the Doctoral Programme in Literary Studies.

Doctoral students may earn a degree in one of the following fields of study:

In the Doctoral Programme in Language Studies:

  • English Philology
  • Scandinavian Languages
  • Translation Studies (English, French, Swedish, German or Russian)
  • French Language
  • German Language and Culture
  • Finnish Language
  • Russian Language and Culture

In 2017, there is no admission to French Language or Translation Studies (French).

In the Doctoral Programme in Literary Studies:

  • Finnish Literature
  • Comparative Literature
