Can I attend courses in English Language, Literature and Translation?
There are naturally many exchange students in Tampere University, from a variety of backgrounds, who would like to take English courses. The courses offered in our department are not necessarily what exchange students are looking for; our language and literature courses are particularly for English specialists, while translation courses demand a good knowledge of Finnish. In any case, it is not possible for us to allow unrestricted entry.
Our courses are therefore open mainly to those who are majoring in English in their home university and have the necessary level of proficiency in English. Students from other disciplines may be admitted only if they are proficient in English and if there is room to accommodate them.
First take the skills test!
To take any courses (with a few exeptions, see below) offered by the Degree Programme in English Language, Literature and Translation, all students—including English majors—must first show the necessary level of proficiency in English by taking a skills test. In the spring term 2013, this test will be held on Friday, January 4th, 14.30-17, Pinni B4116.
Students who arrive later than this may contact Ian Gurney (firstname.lastname@uta.fi) for further advice.
What is the test like?
It is a test of English proficiency and accuracy in writing, with fill-in exercises on article and preposition use, a multiple choice verb test, a vocabulary test, and an exercise in error correction.
What if I don’t do well enough on the test?
Students should also find out about English courses offered in the Language Centre.
The English degree programme offers a few lecture courses which are open for exchange students who have not passed the skills test. These courses also require significantly high English language skills for the students to follow lectures and complete coursework. The courses are:
