Ecocritical Network for Scandinavian Studies

Enscan_ecocritical.gif

The Ecocritical Network for Scandinavian Studies (ENSCAN) facilitates and intensifies international collaboration between scholars in ecocriticism – and even in the environmental humanities in a wider sense – who are working on or are interested in environmental topics related specifically to the literatures and cultures of the Nordic countries. Members of the network may be conducting work on very diverse themes and from a huge variety of theoretical perspectives, but share a common interest in ecocriticism and closely related fields such as geocriticism, posthumanism, postcolonial ecocriticism, Arctic studies, island studies, utopian studies, maritime studies, human-animal studies, and urban studies, in relation to the study of Northern European literatures and cultures.

ENSCAN also organizes workshops and conferences at which the network’s members can meet in person, introduce their research to each other and develop ideas about ecocritical collaboration. There are even plans to launch a peer-reviewed Nordic journal of ecocriticism that will publish articles, reviews and book-reviews also about studies written in the Nordic languages.

If you are interested in joining the network and contributing to its development, please don’t hesitate to contact Pia Maria Ahlbäck (pahlback(at)abo.fi), Reinhard Hennig (reinhard.hennig(at)miun.se), Toni Lahtinen (toni.lahtinen(at)uta.fi), Judith Meurer-Bongardt (judithmb(at)uni-bonn.de), or Juha Raipola (juha.raipola(at)uta.fi).

The ENSCAN website is currently under development, yet you can already access some information on upcoming events, the network’s members, and publications.
