Language and Democracy

Tampere, Finland, 24-26 August 2017

Language and Democracy is an international conference organized by the Modern Language Society at the University of Tampere on 24-26 August 2017 to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the Society and the 100th anniversary of the Finnish Declaration of Independence.

The aim of the conference is to enhance our understanding of the notion of democracy in language use. The key themes of the conference are language and equality, language ideologies, language policies, multilingualism, discourses of democracy, and media discourse and democracy.

The following plenary speakers have confirmed their participation:

Professor Ruth Wodak, University of Lancaster
Professor Jörg Kilian, Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel
Professor Sirpa Leppänen, University of Jyväskylä
Dr Albin Wagener, CoDiRe, Université de Nantes

The working languages of the conference are English, French and German.
