City of Tampere

Tampere is located 175 kilometres north of Helsinki on a narrow strip of land between lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi in a beautiful ridge scenery. The Tammerkoski rapids, flowing in the middle of the city centre, are a nationally recognised landscape.

Tampere was founded by Sweden's young monarch, Gustavus III, in 1779. The city has a monumental industrial history: the Finlayson cotton mill was the first large-scale industrial enterprise in Finland and it was in fact in Finlayson's factory hall that the first electric light in the Nordic countries was lit.

Today Tampere is the third largest city in Finland and the largest inland city in the Nordic countries with a population of over 220,000. The city is a centre of leading-edge technology, research, education, culture, sports and business.

For more information about Tampere, see the City of Tampere and Visit Tampere websites.
