O-ERKO specialisation programme in legal interpreting

The O-ERKO project “Development of Professional Specialisation Education in Legal Interpreting” is a cross-disciplinary programme organised by several universities. Aimed at establishing a professional specialisation education programme in legal interpreting, the project will develop novel technical and educational solutions in legal interpreter training, including a wide range of online learning tools.

The purpose of the specialisation programme is to ensure a sufficient supply of qualified professional legal interpreters. This 40‑credit programme will enable interpreters to apply directly for inclusion in the recently established Legal Interpreter Register maintained by the Finnish National Board of Education without needing to complete a competence-based qualification test first.

The project is being carried out in close collaboration with employers, translator and interpreter organisations, and service users from all over Finland. These partners are taking an active part in planning the programme and can even influence its contents.

The programme started on 1 April 2016 and will run until 31 August 2017, and it is funded by the North Ostrobothnia Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment.
