COSST

Mustikkapaikka.jpgThe project COSST (Corpus-Based Study of State Treaties) investigates the properties of language of state treaties.

The research is based on the corpus analysis of bilateral treaties.

Corpus name is PEST (Parallel Electronic Corpus of State Treaties). One part of corpus (treaties between Finland and Russia) is ready. Then treaties between Finland and Sweden and Russia and Sweden will be collected. Corpus contains treaties from the year of 1917 when Finland became independent. The Russian - Swedish part of treaties will be

prepared in cooperation with the Department of Slavic Languages of Stockholm University.

In future international conventions (the conventions of United Nations) will be collected and added to corpus. This part of corpus will consist of texts in Russian, English, Finnish and Sweden languages.

The collection of texts will expand while countries will sign new treaties.

All texts in corpus are aligned, lemmatized and includes morphologic and syntactic annotations. Also each texts

includes metadata (title of text, year, subject etc.).

For access and search via a web interface is used the TextHammer package. TextHammer has different tools such as frequency lists, concordances, collocators etc.).

PEST is stored on a server and available in Internet on https://mustikka.uta.fi/texthammer/.
