Travel to Tampere

Tampere is easily accessible. It is located in Southern Finland, 175 km north of Helsinki.

There are excellent flight connections to Finland from all parts of the world. Several international airlines offer regular flights to Helsinki. There are very good long-distance bus connections from Helsinki Airport to Tampere. There are also several daily connecting flights on week-days to Tampere and vice versa (see Finnair and Tampere-Pirkkala airport). From Tampere-Pirkkala airport there are very good bus connections to Tampere city as well. The fare is 3 euros and is paid in cash to the driver. (Note, no bills over 20 euros accepted.) Finland is also easily reached by sea from Sweden, Germany, Poland and Russia. There are good bus connections to Tampere directly from the ferry terminals.

Train connections within Finland: VR. There is a local train stopping at Helsinki Airport. You can take the local P train to Tikkurila station and change there to a long-distance train to Tampere. Total one-way cost is approximately 21 euros, depending on when and where you buy your tickets. You can buy tickets in advance online from the VR site. Tickets are also available from the automat on the platform (by credit card only, no cash) or from the guard on the train (card or cash; on the local train, make sure to board a car that has a sign saying tickets are sold there).

Given that the conference starts in the morning of Monday 2 May, it is advisable to arrive on Sunday. Please note that Sunday 1 May is a public holiday, and many timetables and opening times are affected by that. Saturday 30 April is a carnival-like festivity for students and others wishing to celebrate approaching spring. For more on these traditions, see e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walpurgis_Night#Finland or http://www2.hs.fi/english/archive/thisweek/18042000.html.

Finally, most Finns are very fluent in English, and happy to help travellers. Don't be afraid to ask for advice. Our command of other languages varies, but it never hurts to try!
