Research Interests

The sociolectics of American English, area studies perspectives involving United States culture, mid 19th-century German immigration to the Midwestern United States and the development of the civic institutions they founded, student resources and capability to use information and communications technologies (ICT) at the University of Tampere in Finland.

Research In Progress

John Hopkins is currently researching three projects: (a) the sociolectics of American English and comparative area studies of the United States and Finland, with findings channeled into courses of the FAST Area Studies Program; (b) the development and historical change of civic institutions in the city of Boonville, Cooper County, Missouri, as reflected in the Rauh (Rau, Rowe) family history from 1855-present; (c) a project begun with SITRA in 1996 which longitudinally charts student ICT capability, with data collection integrated into the TRENPK5 Digital Literacy and Academic Knowledge Management course.

John D. Hopkins has been Senior Lecturer in American Language and Culture in the Department of Translation Studies since 1973. His publications include American Institutions (Gummerus, 1975), and Dimensions in American Studies (ed., UTA Press, 1983), as well as ESL textbooks and AV series for WSOY Publishers.

Hopkins has also published widely in the field of international education, having been a regular columnist for International Educator, the Advising Quarterly, MicroSIG Reports and World Education News and Reviews, of which he was a contributing editor, as well as other publications of the European Association for International Education, NAFSA: Association of International Educators, and the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP).
