Ongoing research

PhD title: Translating an illustrated text: The interaction of verbal and visual information in a translation process of a technical text

My research sets out to investigate how a multimodal text consisting of visual and verbal information is processed in translation. The data of the study consists of the translations of an illustrated technical text made by translation students as a part of a Master’s level technical translation course from English to Finnish, the commentaries the translators wrote about their translation process, as well as short questionnaires they filled out after completing the assignment. My aim is to develop a deeper understanding of the negotiation of meaning that takes place between the modes of a multimodal source text, and to determine whether the combination of word and image results in semantic expansion of meaning, in other words, new meanings arising from the combination of the two modes in the translation process.

I approach the subject from three different perspectives:

  • Studying the interface between translation theory and studies in multimodality in order to outline a theoretical model for the translation process of an illustrated text (What may be expected to happen in the translation process of an illustrated text?)
  • Examining the translators’ translation commentaries, in other words the translators’ own accounts of the translation process (What do the translators themselves report happening?), and
  • Analyzing the actual translations for semantic expansions (What appears to have actually happened?)

These three perspectives are then combined, compared and contrasted in order to build a preliminary model of how a translator’s interpretation of a text consisting of both visual and verbal information is built.

Revoicing Picturebooks (Book manuscript)

Book manuscript in co-operation with Riitta Oittinen (University of Tampere) and Melissa Garavini (University of Turku).

Picturebook stories are built in the interplay of two different modes, words and images, which convey information employing profoundly different means. Revoicing Picturebooks examines the role of the illustrations in the translation process of picturebooks, investigating how pictorially presented information is treated in the translation process (What is done?), what strategies translators apply to these elements (How is it done?), as well as contemplating on the reasons behind these choices (Why is it done?). All this is elaborated into a discussion of how the translator’s choices affect the word-image relationship in the picturebook, and further, how this affects the readers of the translation.

The research material analysed in the book consists of a diverse assortment of picturebooks and their translations, written in a variety of languages (Finnish, English, German, Swedish, Italian, Spanish and Arabic). It also includes translators’ diaries written during the translation process of a picturebook, representing both translator trainees as well as experienced picturebook translators. Further, the book discusses the publication process of picturebooks, including co-printing of different translation versions and the effects this has on the translation, as well as the role publishing houses and editors play in the translation process. These observations are elaborated into a discussion of how all of these choices affect the readers of the translation.
