Venäläinen kulttuurisemiotiikka ja kirjallisuuden historia, naistutkimus, erityisesti 1800-luvun venäläisten naiskirjailijoiden historia,
populaarikulttuuri ja massamedia, ekokritiikki, tilan tutkimus, erityisesti veden merkitykset venäläisen kaunokirjallisuuden ja elokuvan kuvastossa.

History of Russian literature and culture, gender studies, esp. 19^th century Russian women authors, Russian popular culture and mass media, ecocriticism, space and culture, esp. the imagery of water in Russian literature and film.

Research project: Water as Cultural Space: Changing Values and Representations.  
Joint project with scholars of literary and environmental studies, and historians. 

It is common knowledge that however intensive the education and the scientific investigation concerning natural water resources and water consumption may be, there is a growing need to pay more attention to the cultural dimensions of our individual and collective approaches to water in our everyday lives. The scholarly interest of this project is directed to the social, cultural and literary dimensions of the ecological awareness of how water has been represented and evaluated by historical practices. The significance of the project lies in the analysis of multicultural developments from a comparative point of view and in its contribution to the international discussion taking place in conventional water sciences as well as economic and political fields. The project emphasizes the symbolic power of water imagery and its effect on our choices regarding the management of sustainable water resources. The scholars aim to increase our knowledge of the large reservoir of water imagery, and they emphasise that water is one of the oldest and most important resources of cultural imagination.

Book project: Cultural History of Russian Water. 

The research will focus on the literary and visual representations of water from the beginning of the 20^th century till today. The book will look at the “water library” consisting of the great Soviet novels (by such authors as Gorki, Fedorov, Shaginjan, Paustovskij and Platonov) on the gigantic water construction projects (power plants, canals, dams and sluices). Until the end of the 1950s Soviet literature and film depict the gigantic water constructions providing symbolic systems with Moscow as the imperial “harbour of the five seas”. The book will examine water literature and film from the 1960s till the 1980s in order to find out how the space and the symbolic system(s) of Stalinist hydrotechnology were challenged by literature and film reacting to the scientific-technological ideologization of water. The main metaphor will be the river (with the issues of pollution, the consequences of water dams, and melioration) presented by such authors as Zalygin, Troepolskij, Bitov, Rasputin and Astafjev. The contemporary context will consist of both high and popular literature and films, and focuses on water as a highly ambivalent element. The ambiguity of water as a “border zone”, as a space in-between culture and nature, will be taken into consideration by material which pays attention to such dimensions of water as pleasure and health, e.g. in the Russian and Finnish tourist discourse.
