Research introduction:

The central research goals of addiction medicine are to study the occurrence and prognoses of substance addiction in different health care operating environments, study the effectiveness of early identification and treatment methods, and to introduce good treatment practices to health care. In order to map out the preconditions of introducing new practices, we have studied the attitudes of both patients and staff regarding substance abuse problems. Research platforms have included population screenings, various patient materials (occupational health care, basic and specialised health care, substance abuse treatment) as well as staff surveys. In addition to quantifiable methods, we have also utilised qualitative research methods.

Our research findings have, for example, resulted in national scoring recommendations for using AUDIT-based survey forms to identify risk consumption of alcohol, and advanced the acceptability of substance abuse treatment in health care environments. The group’s research results have been used as the basis for developing various national treatment models for substance abuse problems, such as mini-interventions, driving ability assessments and opioid substitution treatment.

Ongoing research:

- The occurrence of the excessive consumption of alcohol in different environments (population, different levels of health care)
- The identification of alcohol abuse problems in health care (different interview methods, laboratory tests, survey forms)
- The introduction of mini-intervention activities in primary health care
- Staff attitudes towards substance abuse patients (health care, social work)
- Questions related to the motivation for change
- Substance abuse mothers
- Pharmacy agreement for substance abusers
