Radiotherapy and Oncology Research:

The main research subjects are the most common forms of cancer; breast and prostate cancer and their new treatment interventions (anti-cancer drugs, radiation therapy, and psychosocial factors). Clinical drug trials in the area include adjuvant therapy and the treatment of invasive cancer using new targeted cancer drugs, cytostatics, and hormones, as well as radioactive drugs. This research group includes Docent Minna Tanner, Anna-Liisa Kautio MD, Maarit Bärlund MD, Niina Paunu MD, Specialist Petteri Hervonen and Registrar Leena Tianen. In addition to this, the effectiveness of radiation therapy as well as new techniques and fractionation models for the treatment of both breast cancer and prostate cancer are being developed in prospective clinical trials (Specialist Tanja Skyttä, Specialist Petri Reinikainen, Specialist Tapio Tulijoki, Tuija Wigren MD, and radiation therapy physicists). New cancer imaging methods and image processing algorithms are being developed and tested in cooperation with researchers from Tampere University of Technology (Specialist Hannu Pertovaara, and Xingchen Wu MD, PhD).

Quality of life and cost-effectiveness are also being studied, especially in connection with targeted treatments of kidney cancer and adjuvant therapy research into prostate and breast cancer, with topics including the importance of exercise in preventing the recurrence of breast cancer, improving quality of life, and promoting skeletal and cardiovascular health (BREX study).

Clinical trials are carried out in cooperation with several Finnish and international cancer groups, such as the Finnish Breast Cancer Group (FBCG), the Breast International Group (BIG), the Scandinavian Prostate Cancer Group (SPCG), the Ireland Cooperative Clinical  Research Group, and the uro-onco and melanoma groups of the Finnish Oncology Society, as well as general researchers from MED and BioMedTech (the Prostate Cancer Research Centre; molecular biological predictive and prognostic factors).  With the School of Health Sciences and the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), cooperation is focused on the psychosocial effects of cancer and the development of support interventions.

Cooperation is also carried out with the international pharmaceutical industry in several prospective clinical drug trials that focus primarily on the aforementioned forms of cancer.
