New Social Research

The University of Tampere is an internationally renowned research-led university and one of the few in the world to specialise in the social sciences, especially in areas of significant social relevance.  The New Social Research programme was recently established to make a major contribution to the University’s mission to meet the challenges of societal renewal through innovative research.

These complex problems require interdisciplinary social research undertaken in a critically reflexive academic culture that embodies an inclusive and interactive relationship with society. NSR is developing new ways of engaging social stakeholders − citizens, organisations and corporate citizens – in our research work as participants, partners and users of the knowledge we generate.

NSR works with five broad themes: governing complexity; transformation of agency and empowerment; the changing nature of work; the future of well-being, and; new forms of communication, information and interaction. NSR is cross-faculty, interdisciplinary, international and purposefully outward facing.

Professor Rebecca Boden has recently been appointed as the programme director and Professor Jouni Häkli as the vice-director. In 2017 eleven new professors/associate professors will be appointed to the programme. Associate Professors Jaakko KuorikoskiEeva LuhtakallioThomas OlssonOlli Pyyhtinen and Ali Qadir have recently been nominated – brief descriptions of their work are available here.
