3. Changing work

Ongoing societal changes have a strong impact on the way work is carried out and organised. On the one hand, the transformations of the global economy cause large-scale structural changes. On the other hand, the very concept of “work” is becoming increasingly fluid and flexible. Digitalisation, virtualisation and robotisation make some of the current jobs and work tasks redundant while also producing new kinds of jobs. New forms of entrepreneurship and project-based employment will be introduced abreast of long-term employment. The modes of value creation are also changing as customers often take on an active role in the value creation process. The increasing globalisation of business and other institutional activities along with the related multiculturalism within work communities represent yet another ongoing development trend.

The University of Tampere (UTA) has a long tradition in the study of work, labour and leadership. It provides a strong basis on which cutting-edge research can be developed about the new challenges, threats and opportunities having to do with companies, public organisations, employees, the civil society, the natural environment and the interfaces of all these. Such study must illuminate both cooperation and tensions between the parties involved.  It makes brave new methodological approaches necessary, including an intense collaboration with front-runner organisations, such as start-up companies and NGOs, as well as turning the researchers’ gaze also to their immediate environment by exploring and promoting novel work practices in the academic work community.
