The role of the department within the programme will be to provide the cochlear implant/drug delivery

systems for human trials and for other in-vivo investigations.

MED EL is the largest cochlear implant company in Europe, and currently more than 5000 patients

worldwide use MED EL devices. It has carried a number of implant and electrode designs through to

approval by European and other regulatory authorities. It s electrode is designed specifically to do minimum damage to the cochlear structures upon implantation. For implant-related developments the company houses a large research team including implant development, mechanical construction, testing, documentation, and regulatory specialists. It maintains strong academic links with the University of Innsbruck, and has enjoyed successful collaborations with a number of basic and clinical research institutions.

The company founding members (Dr Doz Hochmair and Prof Hochmair) have over 25 years of experience of cochlear implant design and manufacture:

1977 First hybrid cochlear implant worldwide (University of Vienna).

1980-1989 Collaboration with 3M.

1989 Foundation of MED EL

1994 The COMBI 40 system introduced

2001 FDA Approval gained for the Combi 40+ cochlear implant 2002

Next generation cochlear implant targeted.
