Institute of Biomaterials, Tampere University of Technology, Finland

Institute of Biomaterials in Tampere University of Technology is one of the leading European centers in the materials technology of bioabsorbable polymers, composites, and in their use in surgical implants and in tissue engineering. The research in the Institute is also strong in the fields of drug releasing systems and modified natural bioabsorbable materials.

Institute has over 50 international and domestic cooperation projects with the other universities and research institutes. Institute is one of the most productive units in Tampere University of Technology publishing tens of scientific articles annually and having several international patents and patent families. The Academy of Finland nominated a biomaterial consortium, supervised by the Institute of Biomaterials, as one of centers of excellence in Finland. The Institute has developed, in association with Bionx Implants Inc., commercial bioabsorbable implants for management of injured tissues, for example orthopedic devices such as pins, plates, screws and meniscus arrow. Strong antibiotic releasing orthopedic devices have been developed recently.

Role in the current project is to select the suitable polymer for the device and to participate in the development of second generation of cochlea implant.
