University of Michigan, USA Kresge Hearing Institute.

The role of the department within the programme will be quality management and toxicity testing.Workpackage 3 “Toxicity limits of NTF, AO, and bio-polymers (in-vivo)”. WP leader Professor Josef Miller. Also locally responsible for WP2, WP3. Kresge Hearing Research Institute, which consists of 620 square feet of laboratory and office space. It contains three dedicated surgical areas, two electrically-shielded sound proof booths for electrophysiological (ABR) recordings, and complete facilities for sterile animal surgery and post-operative care. It also contains a preparation facility and recording system for studies of cochlear blood flow, including all necessary laser-Doppler and monitoring facilities. The ABR facility is shortly to be replaced with a state of the art Tucker-

Davis system. The Kresge Institute provides access to all the modern research technology required for the project, including: the anatomy laboratory, imaging laboratory, molecular biology core, and computing and statistical core facilities. Professor Miller has several researchers working in his laboratory and 6 laboratory technicians.

Professor Josef Miller is former Head of the Institute, and now Director of the Center for Hearing

Disorders, at the UM, and known worldwide as a leading expert in inner ear neural regeneration research. He is a pioneer in the field of cochlear regeneration through neurotrophins and electrical stimulation. He has good connections to Nordic countries through previous research collaborations and is currently appointed as Foreign Adjunct Professor at the ENT department of the Karolinska Institutet. He has been awarded the Gold Medal by the Finnish Otolarynglogical Society, Honorary Doctorship at Turku University, and a number of other honorary titles. He has published about 500 peer reviewed papers. He is head of the Cochlear Signaling and Tissue Engineering Laboratory
