Jaana Parviainen has a PhD in philosophy from the University of Tampere. Her philosophical interests include phenomenology, epistemology, aesthetics and the philosophy of the body and movement. One of her recent books is Meduusan liike: Mobiiliajan tiedonmuodostuksen filosofiaa 2006 (The Motion of Medusa: Knowledge Formation in the Era of Mobility). The book addresses the cognitive, emotional and social meanings of kinaesthesia in the ubiquitous society. In the research project Organizational Competence of Experts (2000-2003) in the Academy of Finland, she examined the interests and barriers of experts to build collective knowledge with colleagues and clients. She edited a book entitled Kollektiivinen asiantuntijuus (Collective Expertise) which introduces various practices and ways to build collective intelligence, knowing and creativity in professional work. In the LEAR project of the Academy of Finland of the Power in Finland programme, she examined the staples of control and the meaning of collective fears as instruments of power at work.  She has published several books and articles in Finnish and in English. One of her recent articles "Visual simulation of space" written in Finnish concerns virtual space and kinaesthetic imagination and illusions in computer games.
