The Sword and the Hat

The doctor’s sword symbolises the truth so it is a spiritual weapon in defence of the truth, right and good which are the result of the researcher’s powers of reasoning. The doctoral sword was first used in Finland in 1840 in the 200th anniversary of the University of Helsinki (at that time the Imperial Alexander University of Finland). The officially certified civilian sword of Finland designed by Akseli Gallen-Kallela was used as the doctoral sword. Each university has its own emblem which is attached to the sword. The name of the doctor and the date of the conferment ceremony are also engraved on the sword.

The doctor’s hat symbolises freedom and it is also a sign that its bearer is entitled to civil rights in the republic of science. The shape of the hat is round because its bearer must give clear and natural answers to the questions that are posed to her or him and she or he is not allowed to split hairs.

The conferees purchase their own doctoral hats. The type of doctoral hat and lyre are chosen on the basis of the university and degree in question. When you order your hat and lyre, please give the manufacturer the title of your degree and the name of the university.

The conferees can also borrow the sword and hat for the conferment ceremony from family members or acquaintances.

Doctoral hats are manufactured for example by these companies:

E.R. Wahlman

Ateljee Lyolène

Hattuateljee Memmu Lankila
