Proof of English

For language requirements please see the official UTA Admissions website and under the desired Master programme. Below you will find some basic information regarding the language requirements.

In the SIS Master's degree programmes, the following previous studies are accepted as proof of a good command of English. If you fulfil one of the criteria below, you are exempt from submitting a language test score. Please note that you may fit into several of the categories that exempt from the language test requirement. Please choose in the application form the one you feel is most appropriate.

  • A Bachelor's degree completed in English in a university or university of applied sciences in an EU/EEA country, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United States, excluding online degrees. The applicant needs to have stayed in the respective country when studying for the Bachelor's degree. Applicants with a Bachelor's degree in English from Finland are mainly in this category.

  • A Bachelor’s degree completed in a Finnish university in Finnish or Swedish. The compulsory foreign language course included in the degree must be completed in the English language.

  • Secondary education in English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States.

  • Applicants who have taken their pre-university education (yläaste/lukio) in the Finnish language are not required to submit an international language test score but they must submit a copy of their yläaste/lukio certificate and provide evidence of their English language proficiency in their CV (for example information on studies conducted in English or work experience with English as the working language). It is possible to take some exams and complete the Master's thesis in Finnish.

If you are not in any of the groups above, you must submit an international language test score. We accept IELTS Academic, PTE Academic and TOEFL. Please note the following in connection with test scores:

  • The scores mentioned in the UTA requirements are minimum scores only - successful applicants usually have higher scores.

  • You may submit your language test result to University Admissions Finland (UAF) as soon as you wish: UAF will store and attach it to your application once they process your application.

  • If you are selected, you will need to show the original test score with photo before the enrollment to the university.
  • If you are making an application to more than one University of Tampere (or other university using UAF) programme, one test score sent to UAF is enough.
  • Any applicant from the previous application round may use the language test score sent to UAF if the score is valid until the closing date of the forthcoming application round.
