In addition to the lectures and workshops, students are also required to do a final assignment. Details and instructions for this are provided on the introduction lecture.

Course information in the teaching schedule

Course description:

This course will introduce and explore some of the current approaches and topics in game research, and further, familiarize the students with recent research conducted at the Game Research Lab. This year, the specific topics examined on the course are eSports, game preservation, board games in digital society and streaming. The students will gain an understanding of the key questions, theories and methods within the specific research topics covered on the course.

The course consists of lectures by researchers studying the topics of game production through eSports, game preservation, board games and streaming. The lecturers will further lead a group discussion sessions, where students will present and discuss the course reading in groups, and deepen their understanding of the specific research topic. The final assignment of the course will be creating a research plan, to be conducted in small groups.

After completing the course a student is expected to be:

  • familiar with recent research on the presented current topics in game research
  • able to understand, critically consider and evaluate different research approaches in game research
  • able to independently deepen his/her understanding on multidisciplinary game research
