Exercise essay (this section is being updated)

Each student is required to write an exercise essay (harjoitusaine) before submitting the final Master's thesis. According to the SIS study guide, "the aim is to allow the student to exercise scientific writing and clear written expression. An exercise essay is written under the direction of the thesis supervisor and both the content and the language are examined." (In Finnish: see section 16 on the page "Yleiset tutkintomääräykset".) Typically, when the student has written enough text for the thesis, this material may easily be converted into an exercise essay. For more precise instructions in Finnish, see "Ohjeita harjoitusaineen kirjoittajalle". You should return the essay by e-mail to Jaakko (in Finnish or English). We will then check the content and send it to the Language Centre for examination.

Maturity test

All students are required to do a maturity test (kypsyysnäyte) in connection with their Master's thesis. If the student has previously performed a maturity test for a lower of higher university degree, the abstract of the master's thesis will serve as the maturity test; otherwise an essay form test will be carried out. If the student's studies have been in Finnish or Swedish the maturity test will be done in the same language; otherwise it will be done in English (or if another language is requested, as determined by the dean). For more information in Finnish, see section 16.1 on the page "Yleiset tutkintomääräykset".
