In the HapticAuto project we will carry out basic research on multimodal interaction and apply the results in a new domain, automotive systems. New haptic actuator solutions and haptic feedback technologies will also be studied in collaboration with a research group from Stanford University and related industrial partners. The goal of the project is to study the possibilities and application of haptic technology when used multimodally in automotive environment. The research topics addressed are planned to be related to the following categories of automotive technology:

1. Monitoring and control: systems related to driving, understanding of driving conditions and warning of detected or potential risks
2. Communication: systems transferring phone applications in the car displays, support for eyes-free use of communication services, linking of automotive systems and mobile devices in both ways
3. Navigation and orientation: visual and non-visual (auditive, haptic) interaction, supporting both driving and wayfinding, once the user gets out of the car to visit a place.
4. Information and entertainment services: tailored both for drivers and passengers, universal design to support disabled people in addition to ordinary users.
