Active learning spaces is a development and utilization project, in which different spaces or environments related to learning are studies form an interdisciplinary point of view. The project is part of Finnish Technology agency’s "Oppimisratkaisut" (“Learning solutions”) program. Active learning spaces is a value chain project that involves six schools at the University of Tampere, University of Oulu and approximately ten companies.

The project develops and utilizes multimodal and social interaction technologies in education. The research is based on the needs of the educational practitioners. Technological and pedagogical innovations are planned and tested in practical real life situations in Finnish schools.

The key areas in the project are teaching of foreign languages, science, physically active gaming and medical sciences.

Active learning spaces are needed because modern technologies such as gaming, mobile devices, social media and augmented reality and environments have the potential to revolutionize the way education occurs. They can improve learning and engage learners, and even inspire them to become "scientists, artists and engineers" in doing their schoolwork. They may also in some cases even replace the traditional classrooms.

In problem-based learning, for example mobile device allows continuous access to people and information while being engaged with the problem. Augmented reality interfaces can integrate additional information into the local scene in real-time e.g., identification of plant species. Modern technologies and tools provide a rich variety of ways to interact with teachers and fellow learners. Our goal is to conduct research to explore instructional design principles and novel technologies and to see whether they are effective in improving learning.
