Medical learning spaces

Background

The goal of the work package is to enhance the training of medical doctors and personnel by designing simulated environment to train clinical skills. The challenge in teaching advanced skills is to evaluate whether the learner can make out the essential features in critical situation. For example, in resuscitation, the professional needs to focus on certain features in a correct order. However, with traditional methods, it is challenging for the teacher to evaluate if the learner took the proper course of action. Devloping the simulation environments utilises the use on various interaction technologies. This enables the development of a new kind of model for learning clinical skills.

Other area in need of improvement in medical studies simulations is especially diversifying the exercises of various procedures. It is difficult to bring variation to the exercises using a physical dummy patient and physical practice equipment are vulnerable to wear and tear. One stretch goal is to create simulations utilizing force feedback, i.e. haptics.

Applications

In software development of the project, new HTML5-based virtual patient has been developed. The advantage of the virtual patient compared to physical training dummies is that it does not depend on place or equipment. The development of the application is a part of the international network of the School of Medicine. The new decision making application Reason has been developed in Finnish, Australian and Canadian collaboration.

Piloting

The piloting of Reason –virtual patient is a part of the School of Medicine’s simulation-based teaching in dedicated period of simulation teaching. In the work package of medicine, the piloting will be carried out at the end of the current funding period, in the fall of 2013.
