Educational Reform: What Does It Mean for Students?

  1. Starting 1 August 2012, education at the University of Tampere is based on degree programmes, not on majors as it was before. Students admitted to the University of Tampere in 2012 or later will automatically start their studies in the new programmes.

  2. Already-admitted students may earn their degree under the old scheme during the transitional period, i.e. before 31 July 2015. Students admitted to master's degree programmes before 1 August 2012 will study according to the programme's curriculum as before.

  3. Already-admitted students may take the old curriculum guides' courses as independent studies or in some other way by agreement with their school until the end of the 2012 autumn semester.

Old System

New Programme Scheme

Majors

Degree programmes

A Bachelor's degree programme consists of interdisciplinary undergraduate studies leading to a specific Bachelor's degree; a Master's degree programme is graduate studies leading to a specific Master's degree. Each school offers its own study programmes that encompass both undergraduate and graduate studies in a range of subjects.

Postgraduate students study in doctoral programmes.

Minors

Students could freely choose their minors.

Free choice studies

Students can still take free choice courses offered by schools other than their own.

Degree programmes will also offer tailor-made free choice modules for students from other degree programmes.

Courses are competency-based:Curriculum guides will define the competencies students should acquire during a course.

Two-tier degree structure

Students were granted the right to study towards both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree.

Students knew from the beginning which Master's degree programme they would take.

Two-tier degree structure

Students are still granted the right to study towards both a Bachelor's and Master's degree.

The difference between the old and new system is there is a greater independence in the new system between the two degrees: students do not have to know from the beginning which Master's degree programme they will take, but choose only after they have earned their Bachelor's degree.

The number of credits awarded for a course differed greatly.

Each course is worth at least five credits, and the number of credits awarded must be divisible by five.

Studies include an internationalisation module

Degree titles were MA, MSc, etc.

The degree titles will remain the same: MA, MSc, etc.
