Examinations after contact teaching

Exams after lectures and other forms of contact teaching are usually arranged in the classroom at the end of the course unit. For detailed information, you should refer to the teaching schedule of the particular subject. If the teaching schedule does not include this information, it will be announced by the lecturer. More information is also available from the international adviser of the unit. If you are unable to attend the exam after a lecture course, you can ask your teacher if you could take it at another time as a general examination (see below).

General examinations

Many course units can be completed by independent study of literature included in the course unit requirements. General examination is the way to take exams on set books and maturity tests. It is not unusual that the requirements of a taught course unit include an exam on set books in additon to the contents of the taught course.

The schools have set examination dates, which are listed in the teaching schedules.

There are two ways to take general examinations: as an electronic exam and as an exam on a set examination day (pen and paper). Some examinations can also be taken during the summer break.

Electronic Examinations

Electronic examinations can be taken when convenient for the student according to the availability of computers. The University of Tampere electronic exam service is an information system developed on the Moodle teaching platform, which makes it possible to take exams using the information net.

At Electronic Exam Service you will find a list of examinations, which can be taken electronically, and instructions on how to sign up for and take an electronic exam. Please note that the list includes all exams, also those available only in Finnish. By logging into the service with your Basic User Account (BUA) you can make a reservation, check any earlier reservations you may have made and cancel them.

Further information and instructions

Examinations on set examination days (pen and paper)

Traditional pen and paper examinations on set books are taken on general examination days usually arranged once a month. For dates, please see General Examinations > Examinations on set examination days. For an examination on set books, students must sign up through NettiOpsu at least seven (7) days before the exam. For some book examinations, students should sign up by leaving a sign-up envelope in the assigned box at the relevant unit. If the examination day is Saturday, the envelope must be left in the box on Thursday of the previous week at the latest. For detailed information, please see the teaching schedule, or contact the teacher in charge of the exam or the international adviser of your unit.

If the course unit requirements include literature in Finnish, feel free to contact the teacher in charge to find out if Finnish books could be replaced. Please note that any special arrangements must be declared upon enrolment.

Summer Examinations

Many subjects offer students a possibility to take summer exams through electronic exam service. More information is available on the page Studies in Summer.

Examination Results

The results of examinations are entered in the study register in the unit concerned, after which they can be seen in NettiOpsu. The evaluation regulations provide more detailed information on how exam results are to be publicised, how long they are displayed and how they are publicised. They also include information on evaluation, the preservation of results and how to act in problem situations. According to The evaluation regulations, students must be allowed at least one opportunity to retake a test within a reasonable time of the publicising of the results.

Whichever way you take your exams, we wish you the best of luck!
