At the University of Tampere, students do not usually need to sign up for the lecture courses in advance. For seminars and group work, however, signing up is usually required. Depending on the course unit, students sign up using a course enrolment service NettiOpsu (requires a user account) or for some units, there are sign up lists on the notice boards. Information on course units offered in foreign languages as well as instructions on signing up for a particular course unit can be found in the teaching schedules.
The extent of a degree is given in credits (in Finnish "opintopiste", short form "op"). The average input of 1600 working hours needed for studies of one academic year corresponds to 60 credits. One credit corresponds to one ECTS credit.
The Finnish system of academic education gives students a lot of
freedom, and on the other hand, a lot of responsibility, to plan and
schedule studies.
This means that planning the schedule for the academic year, i.e.
choosing the subjects and course units, matching the times of lectures
and keeping the schedule intensive throughout the studies, requires a
lot of activity and responsibility on the part of the student. Exchange and visiting students receive a Letter of Acceptance from one School for one subject. Despite this, they can take courses in other subjects and other schools to form a larger
multi-disciplinary entity according to their own needs and interests,
as long as they meet the requirements of a course unit (previous or
equivalent courses taken, knowledge of the language of
instruction) and there are still places left. Moreover, the
attendance of exchange and visiting students is restricted for some of
the course units. For up-to-date information on course units offered
in foreign languages during the academic year, please see the teaching schedules.
If the course unit you are interested in is not taught during the
semester, you can check if it could be completed through independent
study, e.g. by taking a book examination or writing an essay. To check
this, you will find links from the teaching schedules to the relevant
curriculum lists.
Exchange students of the University of Tamprere can select studies also from other higher education institutions in Tampere Region based on the agreement on Studying in Tampere Region SITR, see left-hand navigation for more information.
