What does it mean to be an international tutor?

International students may need plenty of advice and support when arriving in Tampere, as they will be introduced to a whole new way of life, culture and study system in new surroundings.

An international tutors tasks include, for example:

  • giving a campus tour to the new student(s)
  • collecting the key for the flat at the TOAS housing office
  • helping the student to open a bank account and to pay the rent and Student Union's (Tamy) membership fee
  • helping the student to register with the University
  • helping the student to activate the Basic User Account after registering with the University
  • helping the student to enroll on courses
  • helping the student to collect the Starting Kit from TAMY

It is not the tutor’s task to offer guidance and/or advice in study-related matters, but the student should contact their Faculty’s International Coordinator or the lecturer in question!

Support, advice and information on international tutoring

International tutors are trained by the International Office and Tamy, but also the student associations play a role in organising international tutoring: Contact your student association’s international organiser (kv-tuutorivastaava) if you are interested in becoming an international tutor. If you have any questions about tutoring, you can also always contact the International Office (intoffice (at) uta.fi).

Note that the cooperation with your Faculty’s International Coordinator is important and useful for both parties: International Coordinators are happy to help international tutors and their tutees in possible problems or uncertainties.
