Prolonged Seizures and Status Epilepticus in Children

Piia Haapala, MD (piia.haapala@pshp.fi, piia.metsaranta@uta.fi)

Prolonged convulsive seizures (~status epilepticus) are among the most common pediatric emergencies. We have explored the epidemiology, clinical picture and neurological outcome of such seizures in children treated in Tampere University Hospital. The given treatment was sufficient and prompt and the outcome was overall good. However, the most prevalent neurological sequel was the onset of new epilepsy. In future studies we are focusing on the incidence, type and treatment response of the new epilepsy in these children.
