Sleep Disorders Research

Outi Saarenpää-Heikkilä, MD, PhD (outi.saarenpaa-heikkila@uta.fi)

Juha Kuittinen, MD (juha.kuittinen@uta.fi)

Poor sleep may interfere daytime functioning in children. Daytime sleepiness in schoolchildren has been studied and found to be very common and multifactorial (dissertation, Saarenpää-Heikkilä, 2001). In the follow-up the symptoms were quite permanent in 10%, and short sleeping time, sleep maintenance disorders and living habits turned out to be the most significant factors explaining daytime sleepiness.

We have also studied the prevalence of snoring in schoolchildren and investigated the snorers and non-snorers in sleep laboratory with polysomnography. The psychologist has studied neurodevelopmental profile of these children and it seems that sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is associated to a mildly impaired cognition. The part of the study is also to evaluate the effectiveness of adenotonsillectomy in SDB.

Our most recent project is Child Sleep –cohort study which has begun in 2010. The last babies are going to be born during February 2013. The aim of the study is to investigate longitudinally the epidemiology of childhood sleep disorders and their correlations with the family backgraound, psychomotor and social development, and somatic health, especially the development of obesity. The evolution of snoring and SDB are also followed-up in this cohort from the infancy onward. We are gathering also the genetic samples in the cohort.
