Faculty of Humanities

As of the beginning of 2011 the organisation of the University of Tampere will be changed. Functions pertaining to the University's teaching and research will be organised into nine Schools, to which the present departments and faculties will be transferred. The Faculty of Humanities will be divided into the new schools as follows:

  • School of Education: Speech Communication and Voice Research / Vocology

  • School of Languages, Translation Studies and Literary Studies: Finnish Literature and Comparative Literature; all disciplines from the School of Modern Languages and Translation Studies

  • School of Communication, Media and Theatre: Speech Communication, Theatre and Drama Research, Department of Acting

  • School of Humanities and Social Sciences: Logopedics, all disciplines from the Department of History and Philosophy, and the Department of Music Anthropology

The schools’ web pages will be published 1.1.2011, and updated with all necessary information during the spring 2011. Until the updates are complete the new pages will also direct users to the old Faculty and Department web pages.

The Faculty of Humanities was founded in 1964. The task of the faculty is to engage in research in the Humanities and to provide teaching based thereon. The faculty comprises six departments. There are seventeen major subjects in the field of Humanities, and several study modules designed as minor subjects. In addition, the faculty also offers education in the field of Theatre and Dance: the four-year master's degree offered in the Department of Acting prepares graduates for the actor's profession.

There are some 3500 students in the faculty, of which the majority, approximately 3000, study for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. In addition, there are some 300 postgraduate students and about 200 non-degree students. Every year approximately 300 new students are admitted into the faculty.
