Supplementing your UTA degree

After finishing your Master's degree at UTA, it is possible to supplement the UTA degree taken. You may apply to take courses either in your home Faculty or some other UTA Faculty. The study rights described below are always for a restricted period of time, often for two years.

Supplementing studies in your home Faculty (täydennysopinnot)

Students accepted to take supplementing studies do not have to pay for the courses if the courses are taken during the academic year following the academic year when you graduated. For example, if you graduate in November and your application to take supplementing studies is accepted, you may take courses free during the running academic year plus the following academic year. Academic year runs from 1 August to 31 July. After this, you must pay for the courses.

Supplementing studies in some other UTA Faculty

If you want to take supplementing studies in some other UTA Faculty, your UTA degree must include studies taken in that Faculty worth 10-15 old opintoviikko credits or 15-25 new ECTS credits. The amount of credits required varies from Faculty to Faculty. These supplementing studies are free of charge during the same time period as in the home Faculty.

If you have studied in the other Faculty less than the required amount, it is still possible to make an application. Then you apply for a study right not as a supplementing student but as a non-degree student (see below).

Taking non-degree studies (ylimääräiset opinnot)

Non-degree students always have to pay for the courses. The fee structure is: Basic Studies in one subject 200 e, Intermediate Studies in one subject 300 e, Advanced Studies in one subject 400 e. Individual course units are 30 e per course plus 10 e per ECTS. Thus, a 5 ECTS course unit would be 80 euros.

Application info

A graduate wanting to take supplementing studies or non-degree studies makes an application to the Faculty whose courses s/he wants to study. The courses are the same ones as taken by degree students, i.e. it is easy to find them in the Study Guides and teaching programmes. It is possible to study either individual course units or study modules such as Basic Studies.

Applicants for supplementing studies are to fill in an application form called Hakemus täydennysopintoihin (pdf in Finnish only, please print and ask help in filling from the Faculty). Please enclose with the application form a photocopy of your degree diploma attested by two persons unrelated to you, and your Statement of Purpose giving your motivation to study the applied courses. If you want to take courses in two separate subjects, please submit a separate application form with enclosures to both of them. There is no deadline (except for those wanting to take English Philology).

Applicants for non-degree studies are advised to check the information on the UTA Admissions page. The application deadline is once a year, usually in February.

Only two study rights can be granted at the same time in one Faculty.

After the study right has been granted, it is possible to take only those courses or study modules mentioned in the letter of acceptance. It is not possible to take a degree as a supplementing or non-degree student.

Those graduates with fluent Finnish can apply to courses given by the (UTA) Open University and Institute for Extension Studies (TYT). For more information please see the Täydennysopiskelu page in Finnish (UTA page). These courses are mostly not free of charge.
