The Department of Computer Sciences in the Faculty of Information Sciences offers the following Master's degree programmes in Computer Sciences in English:
All programmes are full-time, two-year programmes. The programmes have been offered in English since 2001.
The application deadline is every year around late January.
Programme homepage and programme prerequisites:
Software Development
Major subject: Computer Science
Programme-specific admission criteria: A completed suitable university level Bachelor's degree or equivalent
in the major subject (Computer Science) or in a closely related field
including a substantial amount of studies in Computer Science. The previous degree should include studies also in Mathematics. Candidates for admission should be well qualified and capable of benefiting from the programme of study. A number of students may be chosen among those applicants with a Bachelor's degree and a good knowledge of English who have been exchange students at the UTA Department of Computer Sciences studying Computer Science course units (code TKOP).
General admission criteria: A good knowledge of English for academic purposes (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 575/90)
Programme profile: The programme aims at expanding the students' knowledge in the software engineering discipline. It offers an excellent opportunity to explore many different areas of software development. The proximity of an exceptionally large number of IT companies operating in the region provides an additional asset to the students.
Software development is examined in all stages of its life cycle. Teaching deals with different software development approaches, requirements management, software design, Internet applications, distributed systems, and adding intelligence in software.
Graduates will have the abilities to participate in demanding and comprehensive software projects at different stages of the project and in various tasks. The degree gives a strong basis for and eligibility to Doctoral studies (available at UTA).
There is no entrance exam; the selections are made using the documents of the BSc degree.
Structure of studies: 80 ECTS of advanced studies in computer sciences including the Master's thesis, 40 ECTS of other studies (including language and complementing studies).
Studies: Studies consist of lectures and seminars on theoretical and methodological questions, and supervised individual research for a Master´s thesis. Studies require active attendance and participation in classes. Some of the course units are organised only once during the programme period. Complementing studies may be required depending on the student's previous studies.
Language studies in Finnish and Communication Studies (c. 6 ECTS credits) and English (c. 3-6 ECTS credits) must be included in the programme studies.
With the long tradition of academic freedom at the University of Tampere, students are free to include in their programme studies some course units also in other fields than their major, thus enabling a multidisciplinary degree.
Usually there is no need to buy any course books.
The programme requires approximately two years of full-time studies. The degree awarded is the Master of Science degree in Computer Science. The degree is a second cycle degree; for more information on Finnish degrees, please see the page on Degrees.

User Interface Software
Development
Major subject: Interactive Technology
Programme-specific admission criteria: A completed suitable university level Bachelor's degree or equivalent
in the major subject (Interactive Technology) or in Computer Science or
in a closely related field including a substantial amount of studies in
Interactive Technology or Computer Science. The previous degree should include studies also in Mathematics. Candidates for admission should be well qualified and capable of benefiting from the programme of study.
General admission criteria: A good knowledge of English for academic purposes (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 575/90)
Programme profile: The programme is the only one of its kind in Finland, giving strong software engineering skills while concentrating on the design and implementation of human-technology interaction. One of the main goals of the programme is to answer to the need in industry and academia for product developers and researchers who can design new user interfaces and build software prototypes that demonstrate the new design.
Graduates will work as programme designers or in tasks requiring design and implementation of user interfaces, or they can become researchers in companies or universities that study the interaction between humans and computers, and develop innovative solutions to different kinds of problems concerning user interfaces. The degree gives a strong basis for and eligibility to Doctoral studies (available at UTA).

Interactive Technology
Major subject: Interactive Technology
Programme-specific admission criteria: A completed suitable university level Bachelor's degree or equivalent
in the major subject (Interactive Technology), or in Computer Science,
in Education or Psychology or other relevant field with studies in
human-computer interaction. Candidates for admission should be well qualified and capable of benefiting from the programme of study.
General admission criteria: A good knowledge of English for academic purposes (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 575/90)
Programme profile: Interactive Technology examines the development of interactive and communicative systems between humans and various technologies with computing power. These can vary from traditional human-computer interaction to ubiquitous computing. The programme is unique in its breadth and depth in many areas of human-computer interaction. With a judicious choice of elective studies the programme can prepare the students for many different careers in user interface research and development.
The most important topics for research and education are usability evaluation, new interaction techniques, graphic user interfaces, emotional and social user interfaces, and learning and collaboration technology.
Graduates will perform as all-round IT professionals who have a people-friendly approach to their work, and also as specialists in interface design and usability evaluation. The degree gives a strong basis for and eligibility to Doctoral studies (available at UTA).
