II Faculty Instructions on Postgraduate Studies


The Faculty of Economics and Administration offers four (4) postgraduate degrees. The major subjects can be chosen among the following subjects:

For special reasons it is possible to take the Doctor of Philosophy –degree at the Faculty of Economics and Administration in case the postgraduate student has taken his/her earlier university degree in other than the major subject of his/her postgraduate degree.

Application

The deadlines for applications for postgraduate studies are 30 April and 15 November,
by which time the applications sent by post must have been received by the University of Tampere.

The detailed information about the major subject which you wish to enter must be clearly indicated in the application form. Please notice that your M.A. thesis must be on the same subject or field of study as you wish to do your licentiate/doctoral studies.

Enclosures

The following enclosures must be attached to your application:
-  a draft research proposal for licentiate thesis or doctoral dissertation
- certificates of your academic and educational background or an official transcript of your university records
- your Master’s degree certificate translated into English
- certificates of your foreign language skills, if any, e.g. English, German, Finnish
- descriptions of the syllabus of your previous studies
- a written work of the level of the Finnish Master’s degree thesis.

Please notice that you are expected to finance your studies yourself. The University of Tampere does not offer any scholarships for foreign students only.  If the applicant comes from a non-EU country he/she must show that his or her income is secured either with a scholarship, a grant or other funds with which the student can support him- or herself during the academic studies. Students must be able to prove that they have at their disposal at least 500 euros a month or 6000 euros for a year.

Studies

During the first year the postgraduates prepare in consultation with their supervisors a personal curriculum (HOPS).

Doctor’s Degree consists of the following studies:
Orientation to postgraduate studies 5 ECTS
Methodological Studies 15 ECTS
Studies supporting the development of the postgraduate student’s scientific professionalism 30 ECTS
Research seminar for postgraduate studies 10 ECTS
The licentiate thesis 90 ECTS
The doctoral dissertation 180 ECTS

The doctoral dissertation

The doctoral dissertation represents scientific research in the field of its major subject based on independent work which is presented for public examination at the public defence.

An appropriate number of scientific publications or manuscripts accepted for publication addressing the same problem area and accompanied by a summary may be accepted as a doctoral dissertation, likewise work which fulfils similar scientific criteria. The publications may include co-authored works if the contribution of the author in question can be demonstrated.

A doctoral dissertation must be written in one of the official languages of Finland or in other international language duly approved by the Faculty.

The licentiate thesis

The licentiate thesis represents scientific research in the field of its major subject based on independent work in which the author demonstrates good knowledge of his/her research field and the ability to independently and critically apply scientific research methods.

An appropriate number of scientific publications or manuscripts accepted for publication addressing the same problem area and accompanied by a summary may be accepted as a licentiate thesis, likewise work which fulfils similar scientific criteria. The publications may include co-authored works if the independent contribution of the author in question can be demonstrated.
