At 9.00 - 11.30

Use of visual methods has become increasingly widespread and applied in social sciences and humanities, political science, policy analysis, media and cultural studies but also in health and nursing studies, educational research, criminology, human and cultural geography, urban studies, management and organization studies, etc. In this session we discuss different applications of visual methods, their advantages and disadvantages and the prospects and insights they offer for studying and understanding social and cultural realm.

chairp. Eriikka Oinonen, Doctor of Social Sciences, Senior Researcher, Institute for Advanced Social Research, University of Tampere

Eeva Luhtakallio, Doctor of Social Sciences, Adjunct Professor, University Lecturer, University of Tampere, School of Social Sciences and Humanities:
Visual representations, gender and political sociology (Esitys lisätty)

I have analyzed visual representations of gender on different levels of political publicity with the help of the development of a methodological tool, the visual frame analysis, in order to bring new dimensions to the study of gender in politics. I present the methodological tool I have developed based on Erving Goffmans orginal idea of the frame analysis through illustrations from my studies on the visual representations of social movement contention and on gender in mainstream periodicals. In both examples, I look at both the dominant frames of the gender representations and the ways in which femininity, masculinity, and gender/sex ambiguity key meanings in the flows of images that take part in the political public sphere.

Anni Kangas, Doctor of Social Sciences, University Lecturer, University of Tampere, School of Management:
Analysing cartoons with the help of pragmatist semiotics (Esitys lisätty)

According to Charles S. Peirce signs are "something by knowing which we know something more". This presentation introduces the basics of Peirce's theory of signs and shows how it may actually enable us to know more about social and political processes. A set of political cartoons are analysed to illustrate the point.

Arja Ropo, Professor, University of Tampere, School of Management:
Documentary film as an outcome of academic research (Esitys lisätty)

It is quite common to use commercial films for scholarly research purposes. However, it is not that common to produce a film as part of a research project. We have made two documentary films in our research project Leadership in spaces and places. This presentation shows glimpses of those films and provides a forum to discuss various aspects of film-making in a research context: motivation, process, methodological perspective and academic publishing, among others.

Gillian Rose, Professor of Cultural Geography, Department of Geography, The Open University, Walton Hall, UK:
Visual research methods now (Esitys lisätty)

Professor Gillian Rose elaborates on the themes raised in her keynote lecture Visual research methods now: surveying, navigating and mapping networks.
