Tampere Graduate Program in Biomedicine and Biotechnology - TGPBB
University of Tampere, Finland

TGPBB travel grant policy:

As a principal rule, 2 000 euros, at most, can be awarded to every graduate student registered to TGPBB for congress trips in Finland or abroad within a four year period (within the limits of the school budget).  Any TGPBB meeting grants that have been awarded to you earlier (please specify these in your application) will be deducted from this sum. There is no fixed sum for a single trip, but it is recommended to use the allowance for more than one trip. It is also highly advisable to apply additional funding from other sources. A poster or a talk is required, as well as a recommendation letter from your supervisor and proper yearly reporting.

- TGPBB an IMT-logo for posters
- University of Tampere, instructions about UTA-logo

In addition to the congress grants, it may be possible to get funding from a separate quota for courses. These grants and their amount are decided on a case-by-case basis. Especially FinBioNet courses and courses abroad are recommended. A recommendation letter from the supervisor is required for these grants also.

To apply, please send a free-form application by e-mail to the Coordinator of TGPBB (merja.helenius@uta.fi). Applications are accepted on a continuous basis unless otherwise notified. Include in your application at least the following information:

-details on the congress or the course
-detailed budget for the trip
-short description of the importance of the trip to your thesis work
-abstract of your poster or talk (when applicable)
-copy of approval letter from congress organizer (if available)
-recommendation letter from your supervisor (by e-mail)

Please contact Kaarin Forsman (kaarin.forsman@uta.fi) in payment matters.

Below you will find links to some meetings and courses that TGPBB particularly recommends.

1) EMBO Practical Courses
(aimed at graduate students, techniques-oriented and taught by WORLD EXPERTS, local costs covered usually in full by EMBO and other sponsors, always within Europe or Israel so travel is not expensive or problematic), throughout the year. Full listing of these, plus other EMBO events, such as workshops and conferences, from http://www.embo.org/events.html

2) Keystone meetings
Virtually all areas of biomedical biology are covered: these are large conferences where presenting a poster is an excellent way to interact with the TOP people in the field worldwide, e.g. prospective postdoc supervisors). Mostly held in spring/winter in mountain resorts in the western USA and Canada.

3) Gordon Research Conferences
State-of-the-art conferences covering most key scientific fields. Admission is on application only, but applications from senior graduate students with interesting and relevant stories to communicate, e.g. via a poster, are strongly encouraged, and usually accepted. Held mainly in summer (but some are scattered around the calendar) in both North America and Europe. Schedules for remaining months of 2010 and for 2011 can be found at http://www.grc.org/meetings.aspx?year=2010 and http://www.grc.org/meetings.aspx?year=2011

4) Cold Spring Harbor laboratory
Courses and symposia in all the main areas of molecular, cellular and developmental biology, involving the best scientists in their fields. See
www.cshl.org.
